Set to extend stay at Old Trafford?

Wayne Rooney wants to sign a new contract at Manchester United according to his agent, Paul Stretford. The English striker has his current contract expiring in 2019 – the year in which he turns 34.

The 30-year-old had his testimonial played at Old Trafford on Wednesday against his former club – Everton. The match ended 0-0 and was deemed as one of the most boring matches ever by the majority of people.

Apart from being Wayne Rooney’s testimonial, it was also the home debut of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly. Jose Mourinho was also managing Manchester United for the first time at Old Trafford.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Rooney’s agent, Paul Stretford revealed that Wayne Rooney is still a target for several clubs around the world. “The very best players who perform at the highest level will always be subject to speculation from the biggest and best clubs. Undoubtedly there has been speculation and undoubtedly there have been enquiries.” said the agent.

Wayne Rooney might have wanted to leave Manchester United several times in the past but this time, things are way too different. Paul Stretford has assured the Manchester United fans that Rooney has no intentions of leaving the club anytime soon.

“But from Wayne’s point of view, he was determined to stay at Manchester United and agree a new contract, and that’s evident by the fact that he’s still here going into his 13th year at the club.” continued Paul Stretford. His agent also mentioned that because Rooney has spent 12 seasons at Old Trafford, he is very badly attached to the club and will not be moving elsewhere.

The English captain is just waiting to hear from the club about contract renewal talks. “Wayne has gone public in stating that he intends to see out his current contract. Should Manchester United make it clear they want him to stay beyond, I think we’ll be sitting down very quickly and ensuring that will happen. revealed Paul Stretford.

Wayner Rooney has played 520 times for Manchester United in the last 12 years, notching 245 in the process. The Englishman is just 4 goals away from equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time record for Manchester United. Sir Bobby Charlton has scored 249 goals in 758 apps and that is one record that looks very likely to be broken by Wayne Rooney this season.
