West Ham beat 10-man Chelsea 2-1 as Jose Mourinho is sent off at half-time

Andy Carroll scores West Ham’s second goal in the 2-1 win over Chelsea at Upton Park

West Ham United temporarily moved up to second place in the Premier League table with a 2-1 win over London rivals Chelsea at Upton Park. Goals from Moura Zarate and Andy Carroll in either half gave the Hammers all three points while Gary Cahill scored the only goal for the visitors

First Half: Chelsea see sending offs and goals denied as West Ham take lead

The tone for the London Derby was set when there were three fouls in the opening three minutes of the game itself. Both Dimitri Payet and Diego Costa had chances for West Ham and Chelsea early in the game, but both players saw their shots go high.

Payet went close again in the 16th minute when his free-kick was palmed away by Asmir Begovic for a corner. Mauro Zarate then scored from the resulting corner kick, from just inside the box, beating Begovic at the near post and into the bottom right corner.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Nemanja Matic picked up yellow cards in the first half with the latter attempting to thwart a West Ham counter-attack by bringing down Cheikhou Kouyate after the Blues almost equalized through a Kurt Zouma header from a Cesc Fabregas corner kick. The ball was cleared just off the goal line and replays showed that the ball was millimetres away from crossing the line and Goal Line Technology ruled out a goal.

Fabregas then scored for the defending champions, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Things got worse for Chelsea as Matic was sent off in the 44th minute for a second bookable offence for a foul on Diafra Sakho. Both John Terry and Fabregas were booked for their protests as even one of the Chelsea staff was asked to leave the dugout and make his way to the tunnel.

Second Half: Andy Carroll saves the day for the Hammers

Jose Mourinho was then sent off by referee John Moss for a reported standoff with the referees at half-time. The Portuguese manager was seen up in the stands as the second half got underway with John Obi Mikel coming on for Cesc Fabregas.

Sky reports that Mourinho tried to make his way into the referee's room at the break, which is off-limits, and was ejected. More to follow.

10 minutes into the second half, Chelsea equalized from their first corner of the half. After the initial header from Willian’s cross fell near the six-yeard box, Cahill was first to pounce and his shot beat Adrian to make it 1-1.

Costa almost got clear on the hour mark but Adrian ran all the way out of his box and near the centre circle to clear the ball down field. Payet was still running things for West Ham with some delightful moves near the box, giving Chelsea players a good workout, but he was still unable to find the target for the Hammers.

Slaven Bilic then made a change in the 69th minute as Andy Carroll came on for goalscorer Zarate. He needed less than 10 minutes to make an impact. Aaron Cresswell crossed the ball into the box from the left flank and the English striker was in the six-yard box to head the ball as it looped over Begovic’s outstretched arm and into the corner of the net.

Chelsea brought Radamel Falcao on in place of Ramires in the 82nd minute while West Ham replaced Manuel Lanzini with Pedro Obiang. Five minutes later, Baba Rahman replaced Cesar Azpilicueta, who had struggled to deal with Carroll’s physicality in the box.

With the clock running down, the Hammers looked to take the ball to the corner flag to see it out, happy with the one-goal cushion.
