1882: Birthday of Bert “Dainty” Ironmonger, the Australian left-arm spinner who was close to unplayable on uncovered wickets.

1943: Prolific England and Warwickshire batsmen Dennis Amiss was born.

1965: Bev Congdon, the New Zealand keeper, became only the second substitute to make a stumping in a Test. Congdon was one of three wicketkeepers used by New Zealand in the match against Pakistan at Lahore.

1996: Sanath Jayasuriya’s 76 off 28 balls came at a strike rate of 271 while his opening partner, Romesh Kaluwitharna, was out for duck in the sixth over when the sore was 70 for 1.

2012: England kept their No. 1 ranking with a series-levelling win against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

1993: Blackburn Rovers’ Mike Newell scored his 1000th Premier League goal against Nottingham Forest.

1989 – Franco Di Santo, Argentine and Wigan Athletic Footballer, celebrates his birthday.

1955 - Fort Wayne beat Syracuse 74-71. It was the lowest scoring NBA Playoff game since the introduction of the 24-second shot clock.

1959 - Bob Cousy (Boston Celtics) achieved 19 assists to tie an NBA Playoff record in a game against Minneapolis.

Golf

1963 - At the age of 23, Jack Nicklaus became the youngest golfer to win the Green Jacket at the Masters Tournament.

Baseball

1969 - U.S. President Nixon threw out the first ball of the 1969 major league baseball season.
