India’s number one women’s golfing amateur Aditi Ashok kept herself composed right from day one to win the 81st Singha Thailand Amateur Championship in the women’s category in dramatic style. Ashok, the overnight leader, carded one-over 73 to finish the tournament at two-under 286, five shots ahead of Australian Gennai Goodwin and Thailand’s Chakansim Khamborn at the par-72 Panya Indra Golf Club in Bangkok.
17-year-old Ashok, who is from Bengaluru, opened the final round with bogeys on 2nd and 3rd before firing birdie on 11th and then dropped another shot on 14th followed by a birdie on 16th to claim the title.
This is the third international victory in 2015 for the current leader of the Indian Golf Union ladies order of merit. Earlier this year, the teenager won the St. Rule Trophy at St. Andrews in June, and the Ladies British Amateur Stroke Play Championship in England last month.
“It feels great to add one more title to the tally this year. I was under control throughout the tournament, which was the key for my victory this week. I was leading on all the days so I am happy that I kept it going to win,”she said.
Delhi’s Seher Atwal (#3 on the IGU ladies amateur Order of Merit) and Bengaluru’s Anisha Padukone (#5 on the IGU ladies amateur Order of Merit) who also represented India in the women’s category, finished 28th and 38th respectively.
In the men’s category – India’s 3rd ranked men’s amateur Samarth Dwivedi continued hisgood form by shooting four-under 68 for the four days total of one-under 287 to finish 6th. Samarth was nine shots behind the winner Blake Proverbs of Australia.
It was another tough day at office for Bengaluru’s Jaibir Singh (#8 on the IGU men amateur Order of Merit) and Jaipur’s Hemendra Choudhary (#4 on the IGU men amateur Order of Merit) as they ended the tournament at 43rd and 53rd respectively in a field of 128 players from 12 countries.
