Speaking at the inauguration of Landmark Group’s 6th edition of ‘Beat Diabetes’ campaign, The Founder and Managing Director of Diabetacare, Dr. Sanjiv Agarwal spoke about how he conceptualised it, whether he thought it would get such an overwhelming response and more.

Excerpts:

1. When did you first conceptualise a campaign to beat diabetes and help create more awareness among the people?

A: I started working on this project in 2011 when I was in United Kingdom (UK). We have a joint enterprise over there along with Warwick University by the name of Nisehat. That was set up to increase awareness among South Asians in the UK, which is a major issue there because South Asians are in huge numbers and uncontrolled diabetes is very bad there.

So we began by screening events in Gurudwaras, Mosques, temples etc and suddenly we saw a lot of interest with people and then they started to ask a lot of questions and that's where the whole cycle began after which Diabeta Care started to provide the full ecosystem of diabetes to patients and physicians.

2. The campaign has gone from strength to strength with sportspersons and other celebrities joining in to create awareness. At the start, did you imagine that you would get such a response across the world and not just the UK?

A: Yes. As a doctor, we knew about the number that existed when it came to those who suffered this problem. Any chronic issue needs to be tackled in 5 ways – awareness being the first one, making them accept the disease the second one, giving them accessible care which is available near their homes, increasing the adherence and making it affordable. So if we can tackle these five issues then we’ll be a winner. We are in the first two legs right now.

3. Going forward, are you looking to take this campaign to different countries and further develop it by getting in other celebrities from other walks of life?

A: Yes. Currently, we are in UK and India. We are soon going to start it in the middle east, so it will be a three-legged strategy for two years and we are looking at different strata of people who are celebrities like an eminent businessman, perhaps, who suffer from diabetes.
