Junior Asia Cup: Women's hockey team outclassed Singapore 12-0

The junior women’s team’s second comprehensive win came against Singapore

The junior Indian women’s hockey team continued their fine run of form to win their second group stage match 12-0 against Singapore at the Junior Asia Cup in Changzhou, China. Anupa Birla, Preeti Dubay and Lily Chanu Mayengbam all scored a brace each to give the young Indian side an easy victory over the lowly Singapore women’s side.

The Indian team, which was high on confidence after having hammered DPR Korea 13-0 in the opening game, pressed forward right from the first whistle while the Singaporean side started the match on a cautious note and tried to keep the possession.

The Indian eves kept on pressing for a goal and eventually earned a penalty corner early in the match, but unfortunately, Jaspreet Kaur blasted the ball wide of the post. However, Punam Birla finally broke the deadlock in the 7th minute and gave India the very important first goal.

4-0 at half-time

Singapore tried to score their first goal from the right flank, but a composed Indian defense denied them any opportunity to equalize. However, the Indians doubled their lead when Captain Rani Rampal pushed a cross towards Anupa Balra who calmly slotted the ball home.

India kept on attacking and scored the third goal in the 15th minute when Preeti Dubey found the net. In the 25th minute, India got another penalty corner opportunity and this time Jaspreet made no mistake and extended India's lead successfully. At the half-time break, the young Indian side were leading by 4-0.

At the restart, Lily Mayebgbam proved too good for the goalie and scored from the penalty corner to give the Indians a thumping 5-0 lead.

The Blue eves scored at regular intervals in the last 10 minutes as the Singaporeans were left to gasping for breath. Navneet, Preeti and Lily score three goals in quick succession as the scoreboard rolled 10-0 in India’s favor.

The Indian team will face the hosts China in their next encounter on September 9th.
