5 of the fittest tennis players

Injuries are part and parcel of every sport. A non-contact sport such as tennis has seen a fair share of injuries over the years. Players are sidelined for long periods due to various injuries. However, there are few players on the tour who have remained injury-free for the most part, missing very few matches in their careers. Here are the 5 of the fittest tennis players in recent times.

#5 Stan Wawrinka

The 2014 Australian Open champion suffered his first major injury in 2007 when he tore his tendon on his right knee that ruled him out of action for 3 months.

Wawrinka may not have won many tournaments since, but he has been a real threat to the top four of tennis. He even went on to win the doubles gold medal at the Beijing Olympics with Roger Federer.

#4 Novak Djokovic

In a11-year playing career, Novak Djokovic has had very few injury concerns. He suffered a wrist injury to his right hand, that ruled him out of the Monte Carlo Masters in 2014, which was a rare instance of the World No. 1 missing a tournament.

He won his first Grand Slam title in 2008 and has improved immensely since then, providing a serious challenge to Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. The Serb has gone on to win six more Grand Slam following that title at Melbourne Park and looks good to win many more, in the coming years.

#3 Feliciano Lopez

Spaniard Feliciano Lopez hasn’t had the kind of success that he would’ve hoped to in his career. He has found it difficult to beat top opposition regularly and is yet to win a Grand Slam title.

However, when it comes to fitness and injury concerns, the 33-yeear-old has suffered very little time off the court. He hurt his left wrist during his semifinal clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the 2008 Beijing Open. Earlier this year, the left-hander suffered a minor illness during his match against Gonzalez Alejandro in the Houston Masters.

#2 Roger Federer

The 17-time Grand Sam champion is one of the consistent players on the tour. He hasn’t been out of action for a long time since becoming a professional player in 1998. Besides a back problem that has re-occurred at different times in his career, the 33-year-old suffered a bout of mononucleosis in 2008.

Apart from that, Federer has managed to stay largely, injury-free in a 16-year long playing career. His dedication to keeping fit is reaping rewards at this stage in his career, when he is still able to maintain his high standards on the court.

#1 David Ferrer

One of the most underrated players in the world, David Ferrer has rarely missed a tournament ever since he turned pro in 2000. He withdrew from a match in the Valencia Open 500 due to a hamstring injury in 2009.

That was the only instance where the Spaniard opted out of a match in an otherwise injury-free career.
