Five best Indian fast bowlers

Amar Singh

Zaheer and Javagal, two of India’s finest fast bowlersCricket has seen quite a few fast bowlers grace the sport from the Indian subcontinent. From the likes of Kapil Dev to Mohammed Shami, the land of spinners has produced some quality talent in terms of pace and swing. It is well known that bowling fast steamy spells on Indian pitches mostly non-conducive to pace and bounce is a very tough task. This is a region where spinners thrive with ease, causing visiting teams to pick players who can judge and counter the spin.In a land like this the task of being a fast bowler doesn’t end with just contributing to your team by complementing the spinners, but if you want to be recognized as a world-class talent you need to find ways of picking the same amount of wickets the seamers across the world get playing in their own lands. So the ability an Indian fast bowler must possess should be of a scale greater than the rest.

#5 Amar Singh

Amar Singh

Amar Singh was another of those fast steamy bowlers who played during the pre-independence era. He owns the bragging rights of being one of the first Indians to receive a test cap. Besides from being an excellent fast bowler he also was a handy lower order batsman who scored Indias first half century.

He was the first player to complete the all rounders dream of picking up 100 wickets and getting to 1000 runs in Ranji cricket. He had an awe-inspiring bowling average of 18.35 in first class cricket containing 42 five wicket hauls. Though he also played only 7 test matches he was very effective in them, picking up 28 wickets at an average of 30.64.

He will always be remembered for his breath taking spell of 7 for 86 against England in Chennai during their visit to Madras in 1933-34.

#4 Mohammed Nissar

Mohammed Nissar during the pre-independence era

Mohammed Nissar a versatile pacerwho played for the pre-independence Indian cricket team. He was easily the fastest bowler India had at that time and wasnt far behind the rest of the world.

Nissar and Amar Singh combined to form a lethal combination which terrorized batsmen during the 1930s period. He later ended up founding PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) and is said to be Pakistans first cricketer. Nissar also has the bragging rights of being the first Indian to pick up a test wicket.

Even though he played only 6 tests he had a versatile bowling average of 28.28 containing 3 five wicket hauls with a best of 5/90. He played a lot more first class cricket matches where he had an even better bowling average of 17.70. Adding to that he also had 32 five wicket against his name.

It would certainly have been a blessing to watch men like these bowl for India during the current era.

#3 Javagal Srinath

The Right handed fast bowler from Karnataka was one who believed in speed and pace. He had bowled a delivery of 149.6 kmph in the 1999 world cup sending the speed guns dizzy. It is also believed that he delivered one at 157 kmph against Zimbabwe in 1997 at Paarl.

Besides being fast he was also mostly accurate which helped him pick up 315 wickets in ODIs making him the only Indian fast bowler to cross the 300 mark in One day Internationals. He is the joint highest wicket taker across all world cups for India alongside Zack who also had taken 44 wickets. He has managed to pick up 533 wickets in first class cricket, a record containing 23 five wicket hauls.

Javagal had to wait to become Indias spearhead until Kapils retirement, but he never compromised on the luxury of speed with which he was gifted. He will always be remembered for his 6 wickets against South Africa in 1996 which not only helped his team avoid defeat but also win the match.

#2 Zaheer Khan

Zaheer Khans famous jump

The only left handed bowler in this list. Though India has seen quite a few left armers really make an impression Zaheer was one who always stood a few steps above the rest.

He is currently Indias second most successful fast bowler only behind Kapil Dev in terms of test wickets taken, with 311 scalps. He has also managed to pick up 282 wicket in the ODI format. With a bowling average of 32.95 in test and 29.44 in ODIs he installed fear in the opposition ranks with his ability to trouble left handers with ease making it a welcome armor in his captains attack.

Zaheer was Indias main element of attack in their victorious 2011 world cup campaign. He ended up picking 21 wickets in the tournament making him the joint highest wicket taker in the tournamentalongside Shahid Afridi. He also managed to pick 18 wickets in the 2003 world cup helping Indian get into the final.

The world would love to see him get back into form and trouble the batsmen with his awe inspiring in-swingers to the right handers.

#1 Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev at his fearsome best

The multi-talented man from Haryana tops the list. He dominated almost every field cricket offered him, be it fast bowling or batting or even fielding. He also was selected for a brief stint as the national coach in 1999.

Kapil who is widely known for helping India win the first ODI world cup ever, was a fearsome fast bowler who loved shaping the ball away, bowling out-swinger after out-swinger, making it his trademark delivery. He later also learnt the art of bowling the in-swinger, making it his primary delivery to clean up tailenders.

Kapil on his test debut immediately showed what he had up his sleeve troubling the Pakistan batsmen with pace and bounce hitting their helmets on more than one occasion. He continued to produce impressive performances for his side and by the end of 1983 he had 250 test wickets against his name. But a knee surgery in 1984 slowed him down making him less devastating for his oppositions. He finally ended up with an impressive record of 434 wickets in test cricket which is the highest by any Indian fast bowler.

He has impressive bowling averages in both ODI and test formats with averages of 29.64 and 27.45 respectively. He also added to his profile a high range of first class wickets, claiming 835 scalps with a jaw dropping 39 five wicket hauls.
