Fashion hits and misses at Wimbledon 2015

Monika

The Championships are in progress, and the first seven days have been action-packed, with the greatest upset so far being Rafael Nadal’s surprise exit. The coming week looks promising in terms of sporting action. But apart from the usual ups and downs, what do non-tennis enthusiasts watch while the players sweat it out on the court? Fashion, of course! Though Wimbledon rules say that the players have to stick to all-white attire, tennis stars bravely experiment with their outfits. These experiments are hit-and-miss, however; while sometimes they succeed, sometimes they fail drastically. Continuing our Wimbledon 2015 partnership with Allen Solly, we bring you some of the fashion hits and misses from the tournament so far.

#1 Venus Williams - Hit

Venus looked gorgeous in her EleVen (her own label) dress. From the front it looked like a plain white frock, but at the back, it was s sexy mess of cords. Venus has come a long way from the outlandish outfits she sported at the start of her career, and today she is a picture of elegance.

#2 Rafael Nadal - Miss

This year, Rafael Nadal was in for a terrible run at Wimbledon, and it seemed his fashion sense had a premonition about that. The superstar wore a plain white Nike T-shirt and long plain shorts that raised the eyebrows of the fashion police. He certainly could have done better than this drab outfit!

#3 Novak Djokovic - Hit

Novak Djokovic's game has been in fine form apart from his scratchy fourth round match, and his fashion sense has been similarly impressive. The Serb has looked very stylish in a white polo-neck T-shirt with diagonal stripes that perfectly complement his body type. Way to go, Djoko!

#4 Serena Williams - Hit

The fashion experts say it is tough to experiment with white, but Serena always proves otherwise. This year, she has been gracing the courts at SW19 with subtle animal prints like she did at the 2014 US Open and the French Open last month.

The dress she has worn here, with a leopard print lower half, looks stylish and unique.

#5 Stan Wawrinka - Miss

Wawrinka is doing great at the sport, but his fashion faux pas continue to bring him under the radar of the fashion police. This year, thanks largely to the Wimbledon ‘all-white’ policy, the Swiss has ditched his 'famous' French Open shorts for a rather dull polo-neck number from Lotto.

#6 Roger Federer - Hit

Wimbledon fashion is all about being classic and classy on court, and Roger Federer never fails to score in that regard. This year, he has teamed a Nike non-collar tee with a pair of well-fitted white shorts. Contrary to what you might have expected, the unbuttoned look really suits the seven-time champ well.

#7 Petra Kvitova - Hit

Though the women's defending champion couldn't reprise her tennis magic from 2014, she definitely created a fashion statement at the All-England Club this year. Her outfit, with a plunging top and a classic white skirt, looked sporty and feminine at the same time. Win.

#8 Camila Giorgi - Miss

Camila Giorgi, an Italian player who went down to Caroline Wozniacki in the third round of the women’s singles, was in the news for the terrible fashion choice that she exhibited this year. Her lacy, floral white dress looked more like a doll's costume than a tennis player's outfit.

#9 Ana Ivanovic - Hit

Ana Ivanovic always looks graceful on court, and leaves the crowd pleased with both her game and her fashion sense. This year, she wore an Adidas outfit replete with horizontal stripes, which showcased her form quite well. Too bad we didn't get to see the classy dress for long.

#10 Maria Sharapova - Hit

If there is one person in the tennis fraternity who never goes wrong with fashion, it is Maria Sharapova. Whether it was her gold-plated shoes at Wimbledon years ago or the amazing dresses that she sports off the court, the Russian has always made waves with her tasteful sartorial sense.

At this year’s Wimbledon, Sharapova has been wearing a low-cut V-neck dress with overlaid animal prints.

Who said white wasn’t in fashion? Not Sharapova, definitely!
