Joshna Chinappa defeats World No.1 Raneem El Welily in the first round of the Qatar Classic

Joshna Chinappa is elated after the win

In some fantastic news coming in for India from the Qatar Classic, India’s Joshna Chinappa has defeated top seed and World No.1 Raneem El Welily of Egypt 11-9 11-6 4-11 11-9 in the opening round of the Qatar Classic on Saturday.

Right from the onset, the Chennai-born player looked in fine touch as she put considerable pressure on her much-fancied opponent and eventually sealed the opening two games. El Welily though fought back very well to win the next game 4-11 and kept the match alive.

In the fourth game, the Indian was certainly staring down the barrel at 5-9, but in a superb display, won 6 points on the trot to stun her opponent and the crowd present at the venue. This is Joshna’s first win over a top-5 ranked player.

It has been a fine last few months fo Joshna who has defeated three top-15 players in recent times. At the Carol Weymuller Open, the 29-year-old defeated 13th ranked Emma Beddoes and at the US Open Squash earlier this month, she defeated World No.10 Annie Au of Hong Kong.

Joshna will take on another Egyptian Yathreb Adel in the second round.
