Federer and Edberg's two-year run comes to an end, no longer master and pupil

Federer and Edberg have been together since 2013

Seventeen-time Grand Slam singles titlist Roger Federer and Swedish maestro Stefan Edberg will go their separate ways after a fruitful two-year working partnership. Edberg, a former world number one himself, is accredited with helping Federer’s game evolve and assimilate more aggression. They have been working together since 2013.

Federer, to whom Edberg is a childhood idol, was dignified as always, in disseminating the decision, and posted this tweet:

Federer also posted this on his website: “After two very successful years, I would like to thank Stefan Edberg, my childhood idol, for agreeing to join my team. It was a dream come true. Although it was supposed to only be for 2014, Stefan was great and agreed to extend the partnership through this year which I really appreciated. He taught me so much and his influence on my game will remain. He will always be a part of my team.”

Federer’s long-time coach and Swiss Davis Cup team coach Severin Luthi will remain in his role, while former Croatian world number three Ivan Ljubicic will assist him. The other members of Federer's team, physiotherapist Daniel Troxler and personal trainer Pierre Paganini, will remain unchanged heading into 2016.

The Federer-Edberg alliance produced eleven singles titles, with six of them clinched in 2015, though Federer’s quest for an eighteenth Grand Slam is still in progress. Federer made it to the Wimbledon finals in this year and the last, but couldn’t get past world number one Novak Djokovic.

Edberg, in a statement to the ATP, thanked Roger Federer for a “wonderful two years”. He went on to say,”It became very clear from the start that this was going to be a special partnership, working with the greatest ambassador tennis has ever seen.

It was exciting for me to be back out on tour and to see that the sport has made so much progress. After an amazing 2014, I decided to continue on for another year, but with a clear understanding that it would be my last year given the time commitment.

I believe Roger still has a lot left to give to the sport of tennis and is capable of winning the big events.”
