French Open 2015: Top 5 matches to watch out for on Day 3

We enter Day 3 at Roland Garros with several first round matches commencing in both men’s and women’s section of the draw. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and 9-time champion Rafael Nadal will start their campaign today.

Here are 5 matches you shouldn’t miss on Tuesday:

  1. Belinda Bencic Vs Daniela Hantuchova

Belinda Bencic is looking to go one better than last year as she squares off against Daniela Hantuchova in the opening round. Both players have had disappointing results coming into Paris losing in first rounds of both Madrid and Rome events.

Bencic reached her best result at a Grand Slam last year when she reached the US Open quarterfinals, but is struggling for consistency at the moment. Hantuchova has reached fourth round at Roland Garros on four occasions, but it will not be an easy start against the 18-year-old.

Both women have won a match in their two meetings so far.

Match Time: Around 8 p.m IST.

  1. Novak Djokovic Vs Jarkko Nieminen

8-time Grand Slam champion will open his bid for his first French Open title in his first round clash against Jarkko Nieminen. The World No. 1 has won trophies in Melbourne, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Rome and arrives in Paris on a 22-match winning streak.

Nieminen on the other hand is coming off a loss against Andrey Rublev at the Geneva Open. It will be an uphill task for the Finn to cause an upset on Tuesday. The duo have met 5 times with Djokovic leading their head-to-head 4-1.

Match Time: Around 5:30 p.m IST.

  1. Andreas Seppi Vs John Isner

Andreas Seppi took out Roger Federer at the Australian Open this year and poses a serious threat to American John Isner in the opening round. Seppi is well rested after losing in the first round of Monte Carlo Masters, while Isner has had good runs in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.

It is the third meeting between the two and both their previous matches have gone the distance. It was Isner who prevailed in their first meeting in the first round of the 2010 Australian Open.

Match Time: Around 6 p.m IST.

  1. Grigor Dimitrov Vs Jack Sock

This match promises to be an exciting one as Grigor Dimitrov is looking for an encore of a brilliant 2014 season to start his turnaround this year. American Jack Sock is no pushover. He won his first clay-court title earlier this year in Houston beating his compatriot Sam Querrey in the final.

Dimitrov had a good outing in Madrid before getting undone by Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. His Rome Masters stint was cut short by Fabio Fognini in the second round.

The Bulgarian won won their only match played on the clay courts of Stockholm last year.

Match Time: Around 7:30 p.m IST.

  1. Eugenie Bouchard Vs Kristina Mladenovic

Eugenie Bouchard has been in woeful form this season losing several first round matches on both hard and clay courts. Her opponent in the first round Kristina Mladenovic finished runner-up to Samantha Stosur in Strasbourg and is confident of upstaging the Canadian in the first round on Tuesday.

Bouchard reached the semifinals here last year and a similar run in 2015 will be tough to pull off for the young Canadian.

This is the first meeting for the duo.

Match Time: Around 7 p.m IST.
