Andy Murray had a tough fight in Round One

Day 2 at Roland Garros

With the world number 1 taking to the court for the first time in this year’s tournament, day 2 had to be more eventful than day 1. Everyone had their eyes on Federer to see whether last year was a deserved victory or only a mere chance which he took for granted due to the decline of Nadal in round four.

Federer played Australian Peter Luczak and from what it seems after the match yesterday, Roger seems to be in explicit touch. His backhands and forehands seem to be doing nothing wrong and Federer seems to be proving a point to all his critics who said that his victory last year was just a mere touch of luck since it wasn’t Nadal he was facing in the finals.

Federer won his match yesterday by thrashing the Australian 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. Federer was at no point in any trouble and it was like watching a training section unfold in front of us. It is still really early for him in the tournament to say who is going to win it.

From the Madrid open last we know that Nadal is back in great form and in the mood of vengeance to win his 5th French open title. The most shocking of results yesterday was the upset of the Spanish Tommy Robredo who is ranked 21 in the tournament. He was defeated by Serbian Viktor Troicki. The Spanish lost 6-4, 6-4, and 6-3. The other upset of the tournament came in the form of 27th rank Feliciano Lopez against the German Julian Reister. The German won 6-1, 7-6 and 6-2.

Also in a marathon match Andy Murray came back from behind to beat Richard Gasquet in a thrilling encounter. The match was a five setter and left the crowds breathless. However, the pace of the game mellowed down to give way to unending rallies as both players were tired and tweaked with injuries. In the end, Murray kept his cool to progress to the second round.

With two ranked Spanish players out of the tournament there is a lot that lies on the shoulders of the 2nd ranked player Rafael Nadal.Even though Federer won the French Open title last year he will still want to win this tournament against Nadal.

With both the top ranked players in top form, this tournament is going to be an absolute thriller. Waiting for the days to unfold, and witness a lot more upsets, we still hope to see a battle between the top two players.
