Saketh Myneni, the Indian tennis star who played in the US Open last month, proposed to his girlfriend Sri Lakshmi Anumolu at the official Davis Cup dinner on Wednesday. Myneni received the best possible answer – “yes” – in response to his proposal. Sri Lakshmi Anumolu is reportedly a UPSC aspirant.
Following the unexpected turn of events, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) celebrated rest of the evening with a last-minute cake to celebrate the moment. Leander Paes, one of the tennis greats of India, congratulated the new couple with a tweet, saying that it was the first time he had seen a marriage proposal at the Davis Cup.
Myneni achieved his career best ranking in singles, 137, this year after qualifying for the main draw of the US Open. He is now set to lead the Indian contingent against Spain in the Davis Cup tie.
The following day, Indian captain Anand Amritraj dropped a hint that Leander Paes could be gearing up with Myneni as his partner for the upcoming doubles rubber event in the World Group Davis Cup play-off fixture.
Reportedly, Amritraj also feels the duo can snatch a point from Spain and that they have a “good chance”. However, Spain is yet to finalise the pairing to face India, who are also undecided till now. The captains of both teams are believed to be looking forward to the opening day proceedings before finalizing the doubles pairings that will face each other.
Myneni, 28, lost to Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic in the first round of the recently concluded US Open.
