The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Kosmos Holding. The Davis Cup is usually contested annually between countries in a knock-out format. It is usually described as the "World Cup of Tennis". This tournament was founded in the year 1900 as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge. Four Members from the harvard university initially challenged Great Britan but however it was the United States who actually accepted the challenge and competed against Great Britan and thus this tournament was born. The 2020 Davis Cup is the 109th edition of the tournament which has incorporated a different format for this edition. This Year's edition will feature 18 nations including the 2019 Champions Spain.
As of 2016, the competitive sport between the two nations (U.S and Australia) spread across 135 nations with Australia and U.S being the leading nations to win the most titles for Davis Cup. U.S has won around 32 tournaments and has finished 29 times as runner ups. While on the other hand Australia has won around 28 times while finishing as runner ups around 19 times.
The main modification for the 109th edition is the creation of a Davis Cup World Group I and World Group II which will be played on a worldwide basis and replace the regional Group I and Group II. As a result, the Davis Cup Nations Ranking will no longer be used to determine which group a nation will be played in. It will take place in a group-stage format over the first four days, with the countries divided into six groups of three teams. Each tie will consist of three matches – two singles and one doubles – of best-of-three sets. The six group winners and the two second-placed teams with the best records will qualify for the knock-out quarter-finals. The semi-finals and finals will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
In order to qualify for the 2020 edition of the Davis Cup. 24 Nations will compete for 12 qualifying spots with Spain, Canada, Great Britan, Russia, France and Serbia having already qualified for the finals.
The Davis Cup 2020 qualifiers will take place in multiple locations starting from 6th of March 2020 and will last till 7th of March 2020.
The 2020 Edition of the Davis Cup is being held at Caja Magica , which is located in Madrid, Spain. This year the tournament will start on 23rd November and will last till 29th of November 2020.
