Novak Djokovic celebrates his straight sets win over Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals

Novak Djokovic was in imperious form as he beat No.9 seed Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Cilic started on a positive note as he held his opening game with a service winner. It was Djokovic who broke in the third game when he hit a volley into the open court on break point. The World No. 1 led 3-1 with two forehand winners and an ace.

Cilic found it difficult to make inroads into Djokovic’s serve as the Serb won the opening set on his fourth set point when Cilic netted his backhand.

Djokovic continued to hold his serve with relative ease and the pressure mounted on Cilic to stay in the second set. The Croat crumbled under pressure in the ninth game when he was 0-40 down. An 124 mph ace saved one, but he netted a backhand after a lengthy rally to give Djokovic a 5-4 lead.

The Serb led two sets to love when Cilic netted his forehand on set point. Cilic had come back from two sets to love down four times in his career before, but it was an uphill task against Djokovic who was playing some terrific tennis.

Djokovic took the lead in the third set in the seventh game when Cilic committed four unforced errors. The solitary break was sufficient for Djokovic who moved into his seventh Wimbledon semifinal when Cilic sent his forehand long on second match point.

Djokovic will take on Richard Gasquet in the last four.

Richard Gasquet beat Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 5-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 to reach the semfinals.

Wawrinka came into this match as the only man in the tournament to have not dropped a set. Gasquet got the crucial break in the seventh game of the opening set when Wawrinka made a bunch of unforced errors.

The Frenchman won the first set when Wawrinka made another backhand error, this time hitting it long. The Swiss came storming back breaking Gasquet’s serve in the second game of the second set. He levels it at one set apiece when Gasquet serves his second double fault in the tenth game.

Wawrinka led two sets to one as he held his serve comfortably in the ninth game of the third set. The fourth set saw both players hold their service games with relative ease and pressure was on Wawrinka serving at 4-5. The Swiss served his double fault of the match at 15-40 to send us into a fifth set.

Gasquet served ahead and broke Wawrinka’s serve in the all important eighth game. He however couldn’t close out the match as he netted a backhand down 30-40.

Gasquet eventualkly broke Wawrinka in the 20th game when Wawrinka hit his backhand long on Gasquet’s second match point.
