WrestleMania XXVII: A Show for the Ages

The WWE had never advertised a show like it did for WrestleMania XXVII, and the show more than lived up to the peoples’ expectations. It was a show to be remembered for ages, the stuff history is made of. The show got to ‘the most electrifying start’ as the host of the night, The Rock, lit up the stage to flag off the Show of Shows. And as the matches began, the entire arena watched in awe as the finest wrestling action unfolded before their eyes. Here’s what happened at the matches:

The Rock Ended Cena's Title Dreams in a Flash!!

The Miz def John Cena (WWE Championship):They always say ‘S**t Happens at ‘Mania’. And this time, John Cena found that out for real. In his seventh consecutive WrestleMania main event, Cena looked all set to regain the belt he had himself designed and worn with pride over the years. He had the entire WWE Universe backing him up. But his spat with the special host, The Rock just proved to be his undoing, one which he won’t forget, ever. Just as Cena was poised to hit the Attitude Adjustment and get the 1-2-3, he was hit by a devastating Rock Bottom right out of the blue. Needless to say, this allowed The Miz to capitalize with a skull-crushing finale and get the three count, making the night the biggest moment in his career.

Edge def Alberto Del Rio (World Heavyweight Champonship):He outlasted 29 other superstars to punch his ticket to the big stage. He enjoyed momentum like very few #1 contenders have done in the past. He seemed invincible. But on this night, Alberto Del Rio just could not cash in on the opportunity of his life. Instead, the Mexican matador became just another statistic in the illustrious resume of Edge, the 9-time World Heavyweight Champion, who was as strong as a stone wall on the night. Edge got his shoulder smashed against the ring post and still escaped from Del Rio’s dangerous cross armbar, catching Del Rio with a modified sharpshooter. And as his best buddy Christian neutralized a nosy Brodus Clay at ringside, Edge sealed the pin with his trademark spear. But the night was not over for the Champ, who proceeded to destroy Del Rio’s prized possession, his super-luxury car, making sure that the challenger lost more than a title match at WrestleMania XXVII.

The Undertaker def. Triple H:Remember what they say about nothing being impossible? Well, try beating the Undertaker at WrestleMania. Most of the wrestling world already was firm in its belief that no one could break the Phenom’s streak at WrestleMania , but the last few doubts were cleared inside the Georgia Dome, when The Undertaker defied his biggest challenge ever, beating a resilient Triple H to take his WrestleMania record to 19-0. After some really breath taking entrance moves from both the competitor, the two got engaged in the brawl of the decade. The Game hit Taker with three consecutive Pedigrees, but that AND tens of repeated steel chair shots could not keep the Demon of Death Valley down on his favourite night of the year. Even Triple H proved to be one tough customer, refusing to go down even after getting hit with a Choke slam, the Last Ride and a Tombstone Piledriver. But at the end of the day,the Hell’s Gate proved to be the difference maker as Triple H passed out to Taker’s death-lock, ending perhaps the greatest match in WrestleMania history.

Randy Orton def. CM Punk:One of the most intense rivalries of the season came to a head at WrestleMania as the WWE’s Apex Predator went one-on-one against the Second City Saviour on the grandest stage of ‘em all. And the match lived up to everyone’s expectations. The two were like a pair of gladiators, both trying to to one-up each other, providing a visual treat of a lifetime to the exhilarated fans. Punk seemed to be gaining the upper hand, as he brutalized Orton’s injured leg to such an extent that the Viper could not execute even a shred of his trademark punt. But as quick as lightning, The Viper struck an RKO on Punk in mid-air, getting an emphatic win on the big stage.

RKO in mid-air!!

Cody Rhodes def. Rey Mysterio:The young and brash Cody Rhodes might just have picked up a win which will take his career to a whole new level, as the self-proclaimed ‘Dashing’ one defeated Rey Mysterio, completing his quest for revenge. As a matter of fact, what ended the feud was the exact thing which started it, and that is a shot to a face with a knee brace, only that they exchanged owners. That’s right, after a series of high flying manoeuvres and a couple of missed 619s, Rhodes hit Rey on the face with his knee brace and followed it up with a Cross Rhodes to get the pin.

Michael Cole def. Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler:Well, there are times when you think you are on the top of the world, just to go crashing into eternal despair. That is a somewhat hyperbole description of what the Hall of Famer ring announcer, The King. After lots of hell-raising, where Michael Cole got his head banged on each and every object at ringside, and the special guest referee Stone Cold Steve Austin raised hell like only the mighty Texan can. Austin hit Jack Swagger with a devastating stunner, The King hit a beaten-up Cole with a flying fist. After Austin made the three-count, they got one huge beer bash started with Booker-T joining in the fun. But the Raw GM played spoiler, as he announced (via his trademark e-mail) that due to Austin’s ‘misuse of power’, the match had been awarded to Michael Cole. That didn’t go too well for Josh Matthews (who read the message), as he got to be at the receiving end of the second stunner of the night.

John Morrison, Trish Stratus and Snooki def. Dolph Ziggler, Layla and Michelle McCool:The best looking people in the business of Pro-Wrestling (not counting Vickie Guerrero at ringside, of course!) came to bash each other up in this match, and living up to the expectations of a wild audience, The Guru of Greatness, the former 5-time women’s champion and the Jersey Shore megastar defeated a disgruntled team of Ziggler and Lay-Cool. People will remember this match for the great acrobatic manoeuvres from all three participants from the winning team.

The Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella and Kofi Kingston def. The Corre:This one did not last as long as everyone expected, but the audience had a great time watching the strange team of two giants, an over-excited Italian and the high-flying Kofi Kingston beat the living hell out of The Corre.

The Great Khali wins WrestleMania battle royal:What was supposed to be a US title lumberjack match between Champion Sheamus and Daniel Bryan, turned into utter chaos as the lumberjacks started fighting each other, turning the ring into a royal mess. The host of the night brought order to the ring by making the match a non-title battle royal, which was won by the gigantic Punjabi Monster, The Great Khali.
