Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea - What the hell was that!

I will be honest, I don’t know what to write or how to react to last night’s loss and that’s simply because one minute I was seething with anger and the next I have felt nothing but sympathy.

I am angry because of many things about last night. I personally couldn’t believe the fact that some Chelsea fans were talking about resting players and taking it easy when we still had a mathematical chance of finishing fourth.

It’s all well and good going on and on about the Champions League final and not playing anyone who is likely to start but that is still a game that needs winning and lets be realistic for a second, our chances are as great as Bayern Munich’s!

What’s the point in putting our eggs in one basket? Well we fucked it good and proper tonight and now we have no choice.

I can understand rotating players, but why did we rotate Cech?? He’s a goalkeeper for Christs sake and spends most of the game standing around watching! Why did he need a rest?

Unfortunately, Ross Turnbull has shown once again that he still has major flaws in his game. The third goal and fourth exposed them.

Malouda and Essien once again had the chance to show what they could do to try and put themselves in the mind of Robbie Di Matteo for Munich but have done nothing of the sort yesterday!

Danny Sturridge is a casualty of RDM’s time in charge unfortunately. With AVB’s encouragement, Sturridge played every week, scored goals but did, however, at times he can become too greedy.

Maybe RDM saw that and as a result he doesn’t play week in, week out. It showed tonight.

Romeu can’t do everything himself in the middle and when he had the ball looked for options and was presented with very little. He also needs games but surely has to be ahead of Essien and Malouda to start in Munich?

It wasn’t a happy return to Anfield for Fernando Torres. He like Romeu could only do so much. He continues to work hard and was unlucky with hitting the underside of the bar in the first half but little went his way tonight.

Another thing that riles me about this game is the fact that, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to have realised that Liverpool would be right up for this game tonight. They would want to try and get some kind of revenge for what happened on Saturday.

So why not expect that? Why not set ourselves up to counter that? As soon as the team news came out and Carroll was starting next to Suarez, we should have adjusted our formation. We didn’t, we reverted back to a formation that recent weeks has proven is dead in the water – the 4-3-3.

JT had 25 minutes of football in the first half, he would want to forget, and knowing him he would have held his hands up.

It’s just the goals we conceded and the way we did that is so frustrating! Suarez should never have been able to bring the ball that far into the box for the first goal, we can’t account for JT’s slip at the wrong time to allow the most over-rated £20m footballer I have ever seen in my life, score to make it 2-0, and then the third from a corner as Turnbull came flapping and was caught in no mans land, for Carroll to head back across goal and Agger, unchallenged being able to head the ball home from eight yards!

Now I do have to be realistic and point out that Ivanovic had hit the post before Liverpool scored and Torres the crossbar before half time. So despite not being able to defend, we could have made it 3-2 before Andy Carroll went down, holding his face after a block from Ivanovic in the box and was given a penalty which Downing missed! It was shocking to see Carroll hold his face while replays showed that the contact was made on his chest!

So, back to my rant. At half time I am thinking to myself OK, we have decided to give a couple of players a rest but we have Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and Salomon Kalou on the bench so bring them on for Malouda, Essien and Sturridge and change back to 4-2-3-1 but it didn’t happen.

We did get a goal back from Ramires after some sloppy defending from a free kick put into the box.

Later, Turnbull gifted Liverpool their fourth goal. After collecting a back pass from the left across the box, he decided to play a pass to someone in our midfield, but instead passed the ball straight to Shelvey who was thirty five yards out and with Turnbull out of position, struck the ball hard into the empty net to make it 4-1.

Again Robbie “Make changes” I was saying but nothing till late on when Sturridge came off for Lukaku who later on, missed a point blank header from six yards, straight at Reina who blocked it and cleared the ball away!

Liverpool saw the game out and to be honest, looking at the players on the pitch, the fourth goal was game over. It’s so disappointing from Chelsea in so many ways!

Now, I understand that players need games. I understand that players want to be involved and have sat there and waited for their turn. So why on earth did they not take that chance tonight?

Raise your game when it goes against you, work hard to put it right, fight for EVERY ball and stand up and think to yourselves “I want to put in the level of performance tonight that will make Robbie put ME in his plans for Munich!” It never happened!.

It pains me to say it but Liverpool took to the pitch with a determination to get out there, up for the game and to do their best to win it. Credit to them for lifting themselves after the weekend.

So Chelsea fans, to those of you who called this game a “dead rubber” or a “nothing game” are you happy now? did watching us capitulate for 30 minutes at Anfield in one of OUR biggest games of ANY season make you feel happy!

Cause it pissed me right off!
