BCCI announces squad for ICC Champions Trophy

Indian bowler Yuvraj Singh (R) celebrate

Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir have been dropped from the squad

It looks like Sandeep Patil and Co. have placed their faith and instincts in the young Indian Turks. Gambhir and Yuvraj haven’t made it to the final fifteen, even though both these player played a major role in India’s ICC Cricket World Cup triumph in 2011. Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma find their places in the squad with Karthik able to don the role of an opening batsman as well as a stand-by wicket-keeper, thanks to their quick-fire performances in the IPL. Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay’s consistent form in the recently concluded Test series has been rewarded as both of them have made it to the Champions Trophy squad.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Vinay Kumar and Irfan Pathan are the seamers that have been selected, while Pragyan Ojha makes way for Amit Mishra, who is enjoying a terrific IPL and is among the wickets consistently. Ishant Sharma comes as a surprise package in the squad. So the bowling department is well fortified with the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin and Amit Mishra, the pace battery of Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma, and the swing kings: Vinay,Bhuvi and Irfan Pathan.

MS Dhoni (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, M Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Vinay Kumar
