Interview with Triathlon athlete Madhurjya Borah: "Sports prepare you for life"

Triathlon might not be a celebrated sport in India, but athletes like Madhurjya Borah are passionately following their dream to represent India in Triathlon at Rio Olympics in 2016. He moved from his hometown in Assam to Bangalore in the year 2009, leaving his family behind in search of better sporting infrastructure and facilities. He won his first medal for India at the South Asian Triathlon Championship held in Pokhara, Nepal earlier this year. In his own words, here are his experiences and aspirations:

Q. What inspired you to take up triathlon, when we have not seen many stars coming out of India in this sport?

A. Triathlon is a sport which is about extreme physical and mental endurance. So that was a challenge I wanted to take and win. I took it up very early in my career and have been winning medals in various competitions. It is a sport that gives me a sense of fulfillment.

Q. What are the events that you are taking part in?

A. In 2013 I have done the South Asian Championship in Nepal, securing second place. Starting from July 2013, I have a few international and national events lined up till December 2013. Besides, I am planning to do a couple of half Marathons as well.

Q. How intense is your training schedule? What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are key to your success?

A. I do about 12 to 14 sessions in a week, putting in about 5 to 7 hours a day. Focus and never-say-die attitude are the mantras I stick to.

Q. What would be your ultimate achievement?

A. I would like to participate in international events and win medals for the country. My achievement goal for the next three years would be to win a medal for India at Rio Olympics.

Q. What is your biggest challenge and what do you do to manage this challenge?

A. To train rigorously and earn for sustenance is the biggest challenge. I monitor my diet very closely. I work with people like Ryan Fernando, a well known sports nutritionist who helps me eat right. I also go to the gym and train hard too.

Q. Last but not the least, what is your message to young aspiring athletes in India?

A. Sports for me is a way of life. Whichever sport you love, just make it intrinsic to your life and your dreams will be fulfilled. Yes, sports also teaches you the essential life skills, hence preparing you for life.
