Oppenheimer trailer breakdown: 3 major takeaways from Christopher Nolan's new biopic

Christopher Nolan's upcoming biopic titled Oppenheimer will be released in the United Kingdom and the United States on July 21, 2023. The upcoming film is the popular director's twelfth full-length project and his career's first-ever biopic. It is worth noting that Nolan's film will be released on the same day as another anticipated film Greta Gerwig's Barbie, which stars Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.

Oppenheimer is based on the life of the American theoretical physicist, Robert Oppenheimer who is widely regarded as the father of the atomic bomb. The physicist led the Manhattan Project during World War II which was responsible for developing the first nuclear weapons.

The official synopsis of the film according to its trailer reads:

"Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it."

1) Cillian Murphy's eerie portrayal of the titular character

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is one of the most popular actors and he completely suits the role of the late scientist. The actor is best known for playing Tommy Shelby in the BBC period drama series Peaky Blinders which ran from 2013–2022. The actor has even earned a Golden Globe Award nomination and was declared one of the greatest Irish film actors by The Irish Times.

His character in the upcoming film had a goal to create a weapon to protect the US. However, once he witnessed the true power of this creation, he realized what a huge mistake he had made and how millions were going to die.

One of his most famous quotes he called him the "destroyer of worlds."

"Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

Murphy's portrayal of the character is seen in the stills of the film that were released and fans have said that he looks the part. They have claimed that the actor is the famed physicist and they love how he can embodied the character.


2) 2023 could be Florence Pugh's year

British actress Florence Pugh hasn't been in showbiz for too long and she already has several hits under her name. Some of her most popular movies are Fighting with My Family, Midsommer and Little Women. She has received nominations for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award before turning 28.

Pugh is already set to star as Princess Irulan, the Emperor's daughter in In Dune: Part Two which will release on November 3, 2023. In Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, she will portray an American psychiatrist and physician named Jean Tatlock, who had a romantic relationship with the creator of the atomic bomb.

It's safe to say, 2023 is going to be her year.


3) Nolan claimed to have an "extraordinary crew" in his film.

The cast of Oppenheimer is nothing short of spectacular as they are actors that are adored by cinephiles. However, it was the crew that Nolan had praises for when asked about the film.

In an interview with Total Film, director Christopher Nolan said that it was one of the most challenging projects he took on just because of the scale of the film. He added that it was just as challenging due to "the breadth of Oppenheimer's story." Nolan said that there were major logistical and practical challenges that he faced.

He noted that he did have an "extraordinary crew" who stepped up and while it will take some for the film to be finished, he is thrilled with what the team has achieved.

Some of the faces that will appear in the movie alongside Murphy and Pugh include Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, and Jack Quaid, among others.


Oppenheimer will be released in the United Kingdom and the United States on July 21, 2023
