3 reasons why we may never see The Shield in WWE again

After Roman Reigns announced his heartbreaking news on RAW, we may have potentially seen the last of one of the best factions the WWE has created in the last decade.

The group consisted of some of the best and most likeable wrestlers the company has to offer, and the trio proved immensely popular, both in NXT, and later on the main shows.

After Reigns' shock announcement, Ambrose turned on Seth Rollins, seemingly signalling an abrupt end for the faction. The WWE reportedly already had plans to break the group up, and plans were understandably moved forward due to the shock announcement.

Many Shield fans will now be wondering if they will ever see their favourite faction again, and here we discuss the reasons why it is unlikely they will.

#3 Unfortunate timing

After a hugely successful first run, The Shield dissolved in 2014 when Roman Reigns stated that he was now his own man. In subsequent years, The Big Dog went on to become the main player in the company, and we had to wait until 2017 to see the trio together once more.

The re-forming of the group was much anticipated by fans, and the trio wasted no time in once again ascending to the top of the company. An unfortunate long term injury to Dean Ambrose however led to the trio quietly breaking up just months after re-uniting.

History has of course repeated itself again in 2018, as the trio were forced to break up within months, due to Reigns' diagnosis.

Both of these instances were unfortunate, however the WWE will likely be hesitant for a third reunion, due to the fact that the last two runs ended before they really got started. We will most likely see the trio acknowledge their past success together, however it remains doubtful whether the WWE would try to resurrect the same gimmick for a third time.

#2 Rollins' personal growth

The WWE is now in desperate need of establishing a new face of the company, due to the unspecified amount of time Reigns will spend away from the ring. Seth Rollins is one of the WWE's main candidates to fill Reigns' role, and to establish himself as the top star, Rollins will need to get as far away from The Shield as possible.

This tactic worked wonders for Roman Reigns after the first Shield break up in 2014, as he broke out as the lone-star of the group, and was able to win without his brothers. Seth Rollins will likely now follow a similar path, and by the time Reigns returns to the ring, Rollins may have firmly established himself as WWE's biggest star.

Over the next few years Rollins will need to establish himself as someone who can both win and defend titles on his own, and pairing him with The Shield may be detrimental to his personal development.

#1 Reigns making up for lost time

Reigns will quickly regain his place at the top upon his return

Since John Cena is now focusing primary on a movie career, Roman Reigns is without a doubt the company's biggest star. It is currently unknown how long Reigns will be away from the ring, but it should be safe to say the 33-year-old will at the very least miss most of 2019.

When Reigns eventually returns, the WWE will waste no time in pushing him back towards the top of the card. Vince McMahon will have big plans for Reigns, and he is likely to quickly return to headlining the main events at major pay-per-views. Being part of The Shield again would reduce his singles push, and it is much more likely that Reigns will clash with his former teammate Seth Rollins.

When looking at all the facts, a Shield reunion cannot be completely ruled out, however it seems incredibly unlikely that we will see any reunion in the next few years. Instead, wrestling fans can be excited to see what each member could do in their individual exciting journeys in the company.
