Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2024: Indian athletes secure five medals on Day 3, including one gold

Indian athletes secured a total of five medals - one gold, two silver, and as many bronze medals on Day 3 of the ongoing 21st Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Dubai on April 26, Friday. With this, India’s medal tally moved to 18 in the Championships.

India’s hammer thrower Harshit Kumar stole the spotlight on the third day of the competition as he threw a distance of 66.7m to secure the gold medal while his colleague Prateek threw a distance of 65.97m to settle for a bronze medal.

Moving forward to the women’s hammer throw, the Indian pair of Nadini and Anushka finished fifth (56.99m) and sixth (55.81m) respectively.

The Indian mixed relay team with P. Abiram, Kanista Teena, Navpreet Singh, and Sandramol Sabu, clocked 3:24.86 seconds and grabbed the silver medal, staying behind China, in 3:24.86 seconds.

Meanwhile, middle-distance runner Laxita Vinod Sandilea clocked 2:07.10 seconds, a second better than her best to record her personal best in the 800m to secure a silver medal. Tanvi Malik settled for the sixth position with 2:13.42 seconds in the final.

On the other hand, Karnataka’s Shreeya Rajesh bagged a bronze medal in the women’s 400m hurdles in 59.20 seconds while her teammate Jeyavindhiya Jegadish could finish at the sixth spot with 1:02.06 seconds.

Furthermore, Sachin finished fourth in the men’s 10,000m race walk (45:50.56s) while his teammate Himanshu was disqualified.

The men’s 4x100m relay finished second in its heat (40.43s) and secured their spot in the final. Also, Sabita Toppo (14.10s) and Unnathi Aiyappa Bolland (13.72s) made it to the finals in the women’s 100m hurdles.

About Asian U20 Athletics Championships

It’s important to note that a total of 60 Indian athletes - 31 men and 29 women - are locking horns in the ongoing Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2024.

The ongoing championships are a qualifying campaign for the World U20 Athletics Championships which will take place in Lima, Peru from August 27 to 31.

In the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2023, India clinched 19 medals to finish at the third spot in the medal tally, behind Japan and the People’s Republic of China.
