
Payton Otterdahl is an American shot-putter who qualified for his second Olympics in Paris this year. He started competing as a runner in track and field before switching to throwing in his middle school. Otterdahl attended Rosemount High School where he also competed in football and wrestling. As a senior, Otterdahl threw 61-00.50 to claim the shot put title and 173-06 to claim the discus state championship. He was recruited by several colleges like Iowa State and the University of Minnesota but ultimately decided to further his athletic career at North Dakota State University.
Otterdahl enjoyed a successful spell with the Bisons in the following years. As a freshman, he won the USA junior national championship in discus and a gold medal at the Junior Pan America games. He clinched the NCAA titles in shot put and weight throw in the indoor throwing events and was the second man ever to win both titles at the NCAA championships. Otterdahl participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, finishing 10th in the shot put category. He trains with Iron Wood Throwers Center located near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Otterdahl entered the Paris 2024 Olympics as the No.4 on the world performance list and will be representing the United States for the second time in an Olympics tournament.
