Vikas Gowda clinches India's first Gold at Asian Athletic Championships

Olympics Day 10 - Athletics

Vikas Gowda

Vikas Gowda clinched his first-ever gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships and booked his place in the Moscow World Championships, after he hurled the iron disc over a distance of 64.90 meters on his fourth throw of the finals.

Gowda went into the fourth round of throws after encountering a spell of bad luck as he slipped on his second throw and threw the disc into the side netting.

He could not get past the 61.93m attempt of his Iranian opponent Mohammad Samimi in his first three attempts.

Not wanting a third silver on the trot at the Asian Athletics Championships, he pushed out his fourth throw and with the crowd cheering on, they watched the discus go past his rival’s throw.

Gowda’s gold saw India’s first day tally at the event rise to three medals at the Championships
