PC Thulasi produced a stirring performance to move into the 2nd round

Continuing his spectacular form, the defending champion Ajay Jayaram stormed into the Men’s Singles 3rd round by brushing aside his German opponent Fabian Roth in straight sets. RMV Gurusaidutt also joined him by overwhelming Chinese Taipei’s Chun-Wei Chen in the 2nd round encounter on Wednesday.

The Chennai-born Jayaram had announced himself into the world stage by slaying higher ranked shuttlers and finishing as a runner-up of the 2015 Korean Super Series. He is seeded 3rd in the 2015 Dutch Open. After his victory over Roth, he will face Finland’s Kasper Lehikoinen in the next round.

The 9th seed, Gurusaidutt seized the initiative when the score was 14-13 in Game 1, by ramming home 6 consecutive points. In a much closer 2nd game, the Indian held his nerve to triumph against Chen. The Hyderabadi will encounter Dmytro Zavadsky of Ukraine in the 3rd round.

In the Women’s Singles, PC Thulasi progressed to the 2nd round after she overcame a fighting performance by the Dutch qualifier, Gayle Mahulette. She will take on Ireland’s Chloe Magee who is ranked 19 places ahead of her.

Meanwhile in the Doubles section, the Indian duo of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy are gunning for a quarterfinal spot after reaching the 2nd round contest against the Dutch combine of Jelle Maas and Mark Caljouw. Their opponents had withdrawn from the 1st round duel.

Facing the Scottish pair of Martin Campbell and Patrick Machugh in a 1st round challenge, Akshay Dewalkar and Pranaav Chopra will also look to progress further in the tournament.

But, Sai Praneeth crashed out of the Dutch Open in the 2nd round after he was vanquished by Denmark’s Rasmus Fladberg. The Mixed Doubles pair of Tarun Kona and Sikki Reddy also exited the tournament when they went down in straight sets to Netherlands’ Jacco Arends and Selena Piek.
