India’s Saina Nehwal progressed through to the second round of the French Open Superseries after beating Michelle Li of Canada 21-18 21-13 in the opening round of the competition on Wednesday.
The opening round saw the Canadian get off to a brisk start, as she raced away to a 7-2 lead. But Saina fought back very well to first bring the match back on level terms and then took the lead to go 11-10 up at the interval.

After the break, the top seed continued to chip away with the points even as her Canadian opponent kept a gap small, but it was the Indian who eventually sealed the game 21-18.
The second game started off on a tight note, but it was Saina all the way after the 4-4 mark as she started to pile on the pressure, by winning points on a consecutive basis to eventually take the game and the match and move into the second round of the competition.
