2015 Korea Open Superseries final preview: Will it be Ajay Jayaram's moment of glory on Sunday?

Can Ajay Jayaram go all the way in Seoul?

Prior to start of the 2015 Korea Open Superseries, if one had looked at both the Indian Men’s and Women’s Singles contenders for the competition, many may have put their money on perhaps a Kidambi Srikanth or a Parupalli Kashyap to progress deep into the tournament, despite the fact that both have been in indifferent form in recent times.

But one man, who probably very few might have given any chance to make any significant impact in the tournament was World No.32 Ajay Jayaram. Unseeded in the tournament, The 27-year-old was the fourth contender in the Men’s Singles category along with HS Prannoy and had a tough opening round contest against World No.6 Viktor Axelson, the same opponent who had beaten him at the same stage of the Japan Open last week.

To the surprise of many, the Chennai-born shuttler defeated the ever-improving Dane 21-15 21-15 to knock him out of the competition. Up next for him was Wong Wing Ki Vincent, a player ranked 30th in the world. While this was a slightly longer match than his previous one, the Indian came out trumps in the contest and moved into the quarterfinals.

A left-hander in the form of Sho Sasaki awaited him in the quarterfinals and once again, Jayaram had to be stretched until 3 games to seal a spot in the semis. The semis saw up against Chou Tien hen, a opponent ranked 25 places above him. Didn't matter on the day. Jayaram swept the tie in two games amd marches his way into a maiden final.

But tomorrow will be a much different challenge for Jayaram. For he will be up against Chen Long, the numero uno ranked player in the world. Will Jayaram pose a significant challenge to Chen or will be it one-way traffic? Only time will tell.
