2015 US Open Grand Prix Gold- Round-up of Day Two Results

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa won their first round match on Wednesday

It was a pretty average second day for the Indian shuttlers at the Yonex Suffolk County Community College US Open Grand Prix Gold tournament. While in men’s singles, three of the Indians managed to make it through to the next round; there was a setback in the women’s singles category as Saili Rane and P.C Thulasi were knocked out in the opener.

In women’s doubles star, Indian pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa progressed to the next round whereas Manu Attri and B.Sumeeth Reddy achieved the same in men’s doubles.

Let’s take a look at the results of day 2 category wise :-

Men’s Singles

14th seed Ajay Jayaram got the better of Jan Frohlich of Czech Republic in the second round. Jayaram, who is ranked 34th in the world defeated the World ranked 128 Czech shuttler 21-9 21-7 in a match which lasted for just 21 minutes. Jayaram has a tough task ahead as he will now take on the top seed and World No. 7 Chou Tien Chen of Taipei for a place in Quarters.

16th seed and World ranked 40, B. Sai Praneeth edged past the World ranked 96 Danish shuttler Christian Lind Thomsen 21-13 9-21 10-21 in the second round of the tournament. He will now play the World No. 143 Yuxiang Huang of China for a place in last 8.

25-year old R.M.V Gurusaidutt defeated compatriot and World No. 44 Anand Pawar in a nail-biting second round match. Ranked 50th in the World, Gurusaidutt defeated Pawar 18-21 21-11 22-20 in a match which ended in 56 minutes.He will now lock horns with the 9th seed and World ranked 26 Japanese player Takuma Ueda in the third round.

Women’s Singles

Indian hopes ended in women’s singles section as both Saili Rane and P.C Thulasi lost their respective opening round matches.

Young Indian shuttler and World No. 68 Saili Rane went down to World No. 22 Japanese ace Yui Hashimoto 17-21 11-21 in a completely one-sided affair. Hashimoto, who recently finished as the runners-up of the Indonesia Open Superseries Premier sealed the match in just 35 minutes.

P.C Thulasi also lost her match to a Japanese player. Ranked 85th in the world Thulasi lost 15-21 6-21 to World No. 27 Sayaka Sato in just 30 minutes.

Women’s Doubles

2011 World Championships bronze medallist pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa entered the second round after defeating the Japanese combo of Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Naghara 21-16 21-14. Gutta and Ponappa, who are seeded 4th in the tournament will now take on the unseeded Turkish duo of Ozge Bayrak and Neslihan Yigit to seal a place in last eight.

Another Indian pair of Pradnya Gadre and Siki Reddy lost a close encounter to Japanese Ayane Kurihara and Naru Shinoya.

Men’s Doubles

World ranked 26 Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy started their campaign on a good note as they thrashed the qualifiers and compatriots K. Dilshad and Tarun Kona 21-16 21-9 in the opener. They will now take on the 2nd seed and World ranked 15 Japanese pair of Noriyasu Hirata and Hirokatsu Hashimoto in the next round. Indians have a win-loss record of 1-0 over their higher ranked Japanese counterparts.

Mixed Doubles

World ranked 59 pair of Tarun Kona and Siki Reddy lost 18-21 16-21 to Taipei pair of Lu Chia Pin and Lee Chia Hsin in the first round.
