2016 German Open: Good start for India on Day One

Parupalli Kashyap got off to the near perfect start at the 2016 German Open in Mulheim an der Ruhr on Tuesday, defeating Artem Pochtarev of Russia 21-9 21-9 to move into the 2nd round. Sameer Verma also got off to a bright start, beating Dymtro Zavadsky 21-9 21-18.

Kidambi Srikanth, however, was made to grind his way to a win by Takuma Ueda, eventually defeating his tricky Japanese opponent 12-21 21-18 21-11 to make it through to the second round.

The only disappointment of the day was the ouster of Kaushal Dharmamer, who lost to Marc Zwiebler in straight games 21-4 21-14. Earlier in the day, he had made his way into the main draw by beating David Peng in the qualifying round 21-10 21-13.

The second round fixtures in the Men’s Singles as well as the Women’s Singles, Men’s, Women’s and the Mixed Doubles fixtures are scheduled for Wednesday.
