Actor-producer Sonu Sood to make biopic on PV Sindhu
What’s the story?
Actor-producer Sonu Sood is the latest Bollywood personality to jump onto the industry’s new-found bandwagon of making biopics on famous athletes and personalities. And the athlete to be the subject of a biopic this time is 21-year-old ace shuttler PV Sindhu, who made the nation proud by winning the badminton singles silver medal at the Rio Olympics.
Announcing his decision to make the biopic, Sonu Sood said, “It feels great to make a biopic on PV Sindhu. It’s the story of a girl who has inspired millions of Indians and given a message that everyone can dream big and not only dream but achieve it too by doing hard work.”
The subject of the biopic, PV Sindhu, reacted to the news saying, “I am very honoured and pleased to know that Sonu Sood has decided to make a biopic on my journey. I’m very impressed with the thorough research that the team has done on my biopic for the last eight months.”
In case you didn’t know...
Bollywood has recently seen a trend of biopics being made on sportspersons’ lives and their achievements. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story was a low-down on the Indian World Cup winning skipper’s life in his hometown of Ranchi, while Sachin Tendulkar is acting in a biopic on his own life, inside and outside cricket.
Other athletes who have seen their achievements being converted to films include Mary Kom, Milkha Singh and Mohammed Azharuddin.
The heart of the matter
Sindhu has made the nation proud by winning a silver at the Rio Olympics and avenged her Olympics defeat to Carolina Marin by getting the better of her Danish rival at the Indian Open Super Series final earlier this month.
Sonu Sood justified his decision to make a biopic on the shuttler saying that hers was an inspiring journey that everyone needed to know.
The biopic is still in the planning stage and it will obviously be a while before the film is made and released. It is expected to inspire millions of youngsters in India – to not necessarily take up badminton as a sport, but to work hard and achieve their goals in spite of the hardships that they face.
While the efforts of the filmmaking industry to bring sportspersons and their lives into focus is appreciated, it is important to note that PV Sindhu is only 21-years old and is not even through half her badminton career.
She is expected to play for many years more and it might be a better idea to make a biopic that captures her entire career than to just focus on one of her achievements.Published 01 May 2017, 12:27 IST
