Former World No. 1 Saina Nehwal has slipped out of the top 10 in the latest world rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Thursday, January 25, 2018. Nehwal is now placed at 12th with 51320 points after being in the top 10 for two months.
The slide comes as a result of points coming off her Malaysia Masters triumph last year. Saina did not defend her title at the said tournament this year.
The London Olympic bronze medallist has reached the quarter-finals of the ongoing Indonesia Masters this week where she will face her compatriot and second seed, PV Sindhu. The blockbuster last-eight face-off is scheduled to be held today.
Meanwhile, there has been no change in Sindhu’s ranking and she is still firm at the third position.
Former national champion Rituparna Das climbed a place to 54th and Tata Open champion Ruthvika Shivani Gadde rose three spots to 79th.
Srikanth and Prannoy's rankings unchanged
On the men’s side, Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy stay put at the third and the 10th spots respectively. Sai Praneeth, who won a round at the Malaysia Masters last week, too maintains his World No. 15 ranking.
Sameer Verma remains 30th and Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap too is static at 55th. Sourabh Verma dropped two places to 52nd while Ajay Jayaram plunged six rungs to 44th.
Senior National Championships bronze medallist Subhankar Dey is now 63rd and Tata Open runner-up Lakshya Sen is 88th.
In men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty hold on to 32nd. The two have caused a couple of upsets and are in contention for a semi-final berth at the Indonesia Masters. National champions Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy are right after them at 33rd.
The women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy won a round at the Malaysia Masters last week and that pushed them up by four spots to 24th. In mixed doubles, Reddy and Pranaav Jerry Chopra rose a solitary rung to 17th and the duo of Ponnappa and Rankireddy holds on to 73rd.
