The final matches of the Canada Open were played yesterday on 7th of July in Calgary, Canada.
Parupalli Kashyap was the only Indian to make it to the final, but failed to cross the last hurdle.
Ranked 36 in the world, Kashyap went down against world number 126, China's Li Shi Feng 22-20, 14-21, 17-21 in a match lasting for one hour and sixteen minutes.
Kashyap's physical fitness was put through a great test in this tournament, as four out of the five matches he played in this tournament lasted for more than an hour. He won his second round match against the Chinese Ren Peng Bo by a score of 23-21,21-23,21-19 and defeated Frenchman Lucas Claerbout by 12-21, 23-21, 24-22 in the quarterfinals.
After such exhausting matches, he defeated higher ranked Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 14-21, 21-17, 21-18 in the semifinals. Kashyap was considered the favourite to win the title in the final, but the young Chinese shuttler edged past him.
Kashyap's last title win came way back in 2018 when he won the Austrian Open International challenge. He will next be seen playing in the US Open 2019, which is starting from tomorrow. He will be facing India's rising star, Lakshya Sen, in the opening round.
Korea's rising star An Se Young, who has defeated 2012 Olympic champion, Li Xuruei and current world number one Tai Tzu Ying this year, proved to be just too good for the Chinese Wang Zhi Yi, as she won 21-15, 22-20 in a match which lasted for fifty-five minutes. This is her second title victory of this season.
In Men's doubles finals, the 8th seeded Danish duo of Mads Conrad-Peterson and Mathias Boe defeated Japanese duo of Hiroki Okamura and Masayuki Onodera 21-12, 21-18 to win the title.
In women's doubles, the 7th seeded New Zealand's duo of Setyana Mapasa and Gronya Somerville stunned the 5th seeded Korean duo of Chang Ye Na and Kim Hye Rin as they won the match 21-16, 21-14 in just 39 minutes.
In mixed doubles, Korean duo of Ko Sung Hyun and Eom Hye Won defeated the Chinese duo of Gou Xin Wa and Zhang Shu Xian, 21-19, 21-19 to win the coveted trophy.Published 08 Jul 2019, 08:34 IST
