In a much awaited encounter of Arvind Bhat representing India and Nan Wei of Hong Kong, the result came in the favour of Hong Kong. This was a crucial quarterfinal match of Men’s Singles category which took place at the Topsport Centre – 1 in the morning session of the third day of Yonex Dutch Open Badminton Tournament 2013. The match was a one-sided clash as the Hong Kong shuttler dominated throughout the match and won the game by 21-8 and 21-12. The Indian hopes finally came to an end with Arvind’s defeat in Yonex Dutch Open 2013.
The World No. 88 Arvind Bhat started his proceedings in this tournament with a comeback win against Hsu Jui Ting of Chinese Taipei. After losing in his first game closely, he came back strongly with a convincing win over his opponent. It was a tiring show which lasted for more than an hour and ultimately went in favour of Bhat. In his second round match, he faced Gabriel Ulldahl of Sweden where Bhat continued his winning streak and registered victory with 21-14 and 21-18.
On the other side, the 92nd ranked Nan Wei of Hong Kong, who has won 12 out of 19 matches this year, also started with a winning node against Stilian Makarski of Bulgaria with a comfortable margin in his first round match. His second round battle was against Kaizar Bobby Alexander of Indonesia. He defeated the opposition by 21-14 and 21-10 in a match which lasted only 27 minutes. Following this victory, in the third round match with Henri Hurskainen of Sweden, Nan Wei was in full control of the match from the very beginning. He won the game by 21-18 and 21-17. Just before this tournament, Nan Wei failed against a Swedish opponent on 2nd October, 2013 in London Grand Pix Gold 2013.
Prior to this quarter final match, the same opponents Nan and Arvind clashed in the Li Ning Singapore Open 2013 in June where the Hong Kong Smasher Nan managed to win the match after losing the first game to Bhat. He continued his dominance over Arvind in this Yonex Open tournament also and entered the semifinals.
