Indian shuttler Subhankar Dey won a couple of rounds in qualifying to book his berth in the main draw of the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2019 - a Super 500 tournament that started in Jakarta, Indonesia on Tuesday.

The first round in qualifying was a hard-fought affair for Dey. The World No. 49 needed 52 minutes to prevail over the 160th ranked Gatjra Piliang Fiqihilahi Cupu 21-18, 21-18.

His final qualifying round proved to be a way easier affair. Daniel Fan of Australia could not provide Subhankar much resistance. The World No. 180 crumbled to an 11-21, 15-21 defeat in just 26 minutes.

Dey meets the sixth seed and former World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen in the first round of the main draw.

Subhankar started the season with a first round victory at the Thailand Masters - a Super 300 tournament. At the Malaysia Masters the following week, he fell to the former World No. 9 Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in the first round of qualifying.

Dey had a fabulous end of the season last year. He won the biggest title of his career at the SaarLorLux Open where he accounted for his idol, Lin Dan, in the pre-quarter-finals. He also reached the final of the Dubai International Challenge.

While Dey soared high, the India No. 2 mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy failed to cross the first hurdle. The World No. 24 pair succumbed to a 15-21, 15-21 defeat at the hands of the fourth seeds Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia.

The top Indian stars will be in action on Wednesday. While Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal will try to improve their performances from the Malaysia Masters last week, BWF World Tour Finals champion PV Sindhu will be playing her first tournament of the new season.
