Sometimes, athletes are so well-known and popular in the world that their adoring fans give them nicknames from their side. And now, it has come to light that badminton-crazy fans in Indonesia have been giving the top Indian players a few wacky nicknames.

Former world number 1, Saina Nehwal is dubbed 'Miss Court' while Rio Olympics silver medalist PV Sindhu is fondly referred to as 'Miss Mallika'. Doubles ace Jwala Gutta has been nicknamed 'Miss Gang Dolly'.

Badminton is one of the most popular sports in Indonesia and top shuttlers from across the world are revered by fans in the country.

The heart of the matter

The nicknames can be seen on a popular Indonesia badminton fan page on Facebook, named Badminton Wonder Fans, which has nearly 1.4 lakh followers.

There are a number of other hilarious nicknames as well for some of the international stars. South Korean shuttler Sung Ji Hyun is fondly called 'Miss Beauty' while world number one Tai Tzu Ying is referred to as 'Miss Accessory'.

India's shuttlers have enjoyed an incredible 2017 that has seen them win a number of Superseries titles and has seen an incredible surge in popularity for them in India and across the world.

What's next?

Two Indian shuttlers - Srikanth Kidambi and PV Sindhu will take part in the upcoming season-ending Dubai World Superseries Finals, which will see the top eight shuttlers from each category face off.

Some of the names given by the Indonesian fans are truly hilarious! However, it is really heartening to see Indian shuttlers receive adulation and affection from fans abroad. One can't help but think what names the fans use for the likes of Srikanth Kidambi and HS Prannoy.
