Japan Open 2013: PV Sindhu crashes, H.S Prannoy stuns World No.6 Jorgensen

In the biggest upset of the day, India’s PV Sindhu crashed out in the second round of the ongoing Yonex Japan Open 2013 today, losing to a Japanese qualifier.

Sindhu lost 6-21, 17-21 in straight games, with the scoreline in the first game clearly reflecting the poor performance put in by the Hyderabad star.

Sindhu was tipped as one of the favourites to win the tournament after World No.1 Li Xuerui withdrew from the tournament yesterday with a knee injury. Sindhu and Xuerui were expected to clash in the quarter-finals. World No.2 Ratchanok Intanon also pulled out of the tournament with a back injury.

H.S Prannoy, meanwhile, pulled off an upset in the men’s singles, beating World No.6 Jan O Jorgensen 21-14, 13-21, 21-17 in a tough three game encounter.

Prannoy is ranked 50 places lower than Jorgensen, but managed to pull off a good victory against Jorgensen.

After exchanging points in Game 1 all the way to 12-12, Prannoy pulled way and quite comfortably won 21-14. Jorgensen rallied immediately to take the second equally comfortablly at 21-13. In a closely fought decider, Prannoy managed to complete the win 21-17.

Ajay Jayaram, the World No. 30, managed to overcome Yuichi Ikeda 21-13, 11-21, 21-18.

Ikeda managed to come back strongly after the losing the first game comfortably, but Jayaram held on using all his experience well to take the decider and progress.

K Srikanth also advanced to the next round after a routine 21-12, 21-16 win over another Japanese Kazuteru Kozai.

The lone Indian doubles team of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy lost to fourth seeds Xialong Liu and Zihan Qiu of China 17-21, 16-21.

Anand Pawar took on World No.1 Lee Chong Wei in the final Indian match of the day, losing 12-21, 16-21 in straight sets.
