The 2024 Uber Cup is underway, and India have gotten off to a nearly perfect start in Chengdu, China. Placed in Group A alongside hosts China, Singapore and Canada, the Indian women faced Canada in their opening round on Saturday (April 27).

The nation’s team at the Uber Cup is made up of primarily up-and-coming shuttlers, with two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion PV Sindhu having withdrawn from the event in order to focus on the Paris Olympics.

Getting things started for India today at the competition was Ashmita Chaliha. The World No. 53 pulled off a major upset, taking down Canada's higher-ranked Michelle Li. Chaliha had a difficult battle in front of her, but she managed to trudge through 26-24, 24-22 to give India a winning start.

Next, doubles duo of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra, as well as singles player Isharani Baruah took two consecutive wins to put India 3-0 in the lead.

The country's only loss of the day came when Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker fell short against Jackie Dent and Crystal Lai in straight games. However, Badminton Asia Team Championships star Anmol Kharb put India back on track with a dominant win over Eliana Zhang.

With the first day done, home favorites China currently sit atop the team standings in Group A. Chinese players were on fire today as they took a win over Singapore without dropping a single match. Next in the standings is India, with Canada and Singapore in third and fourth places.
