Day 1 of the 2025 Malaysia Open got off to a chaotic start. Multiple Indian stars were originally scheduled to be in action today (January 7), but due a leaky roof, a handful of matches were pushed back to Wednesday (January 8), including HS Prannoy’s much-awaited return to court. Instead, only Treesa Jolly/Gayathri Gopichand and Lakshya Sen got down to business today.
Jolly and Gopichand were up against World No. 42 Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai and were the easy favorites for the win. The two Indians ended their 2024 on a high, after they became the only shuttlers from the nation to qualify for the BWF World Tour Finals.
Making their season debut in Kuala Lumpur, the duo, seeded sixth in the tournament, looked equally impressive. They opened their match with an explosive start, claiming a 21-10, 21-10 win over their Thai opponents. Up next, Jolly and Gopichand will play China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shi Xian for their Round-of-16 battle.
Elsewhere at the Malaysia Open, Lakshya Sen took on Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen for his opening-round match in the Round of 32. The Indian had an impressive 2024 season, reaching the semifinals of the Paris Olympics, claiming a title finish at the Syed Modi International, and a third-place finish at the King’s Cup.
Today, the Indian seemed completely out of sorts. He got off to a shaky start, and Jen was quick to capitalize on that, clinching a 21-14 win in the first game. The change of courts brought no relief for the Indian, and he was shown the door 21-7.
Tomorrow's action at the Malaysia Open will see multiple Indians in action, including HS Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty, Ashwini Ponappa/Tanisha Crasto and Priyanshu Rajawat amongst others.
