Parupalli Kashyap set to return to action at next month's Indonesia Open

Parupalli Kashyap

In some heartening news for Indian badminton, experienced shuttler and reigning Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap is all set to return back to the courts at the Indonesian Grand Prix Gold next month.

The 29-year-old, who didn’t feature at the Rio Olympics, courtesy a serious knee injury, has shifted base to Bengaluru for a few months and is presently training at the Tom John academy.

Citing his reasoning for the shift in coaches, Kashyap said that he wanted a change in atmosphere and expressed disappointment in missing out on Rio.

"I had injured my medial collateral ligament in right leg and had to go under the knife. What followed was a long rehabilitation process. I wanted a change in atmosphere, so I decided to shift to Bangalore for some time.

“It has been a difficult time for me since I injured my knee in the run up to the Olympics. It was disappointing to miss out of Rio. So I thought I should do something different to get back to shape," he said.

He further added that along with the Indonesia Open, he also intended to play in the Korea and Japan Open that follows that tournament. The 29-year-old’s last competitive event was the German Open in March, where he was knocked out in the third round of competition.

His best result in 2015 was winning the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold in January.
