What's the story?

Kirsty Gilmour, a shuttler from Scotland who is in India for the Premier Badminton League expressed her shock at the number of cars on Indian roads, and how few of them were actually following traffic regulations.

In case you didn't know...

Kirsty Gilmour is a 24-year-old Scottish badminton singles player who has won the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She is currently ranked No. 16 in BWF Womens' Singles Rankings and has achieved a career-high ranking of 14 in the world. Gilmour is part of the Premier Badminton League's (PBL) Bengaluru Blasters.

The heart of the matter

Gilmour tweeted a short video from the Bengaluru Blasters team bus while travelling on the roads of New Delhi and expressed her shock at the ignorance of traffic rules by the drivers. She shot the video during a turn where a lot of cars were crisscrossing just in front of their team bus.

The video shows several cars, rickshaws, and two-wheelers flouting lane discipline and cutting in wherever space was available. The traffic congestion conditions and reckless rule-breaking came off as a shocker to the Scottish shuttler, who surely must not be used to this back in her homeland.

Gilmour made a sarcastic comment on the Indian traffic norms as traffic rules and courtesies are rarely followed here.

What's next?

Bengaluru Blasters next take on Mumbai Rockets in their Premier Badminton League (PBL) fixture on January 1, 2018, at the Babu Banarasi Das UP Badminton Academy in Lucknow. Bengaluru Blasters are currently perched on the fifth spot on the PBL standings.

Author's take

Though these traffic conditions may come off as unusual and shocking to the Scottish shuttler, sadly, this is the state of traffic in most cities of India. Gilmour's tweet highlights this and further calls into question the need for Indian drivers to follow the rules and regulations properly.
