Syed Modi International 2018: Saina and Kashyap enter quarters; Sameer, Sai Praneeth progress too

London Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal marched into the quarter-finals of the Syed Modi International Badminton Championship 2018. It is a part of HSBC world Tour 300 event. 2014 Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap also progressed into the last-eight after beating Firman Abdul Kholik of Indonesia. No. 3 seed Sameer Verma and No. 4 seed B. Sai Praneeth also advanced to the quarter-final stage in Lucknow.

Home favourite Saina Nehwal beat another Indian player Amolika Singh Sisodiya in two straight sets by 21-14, 21-9 in just 25 minutes. She will now be up against another Indian player, Rituparna Das in the quarter-finals on Friday. Saina won the title here twice in 2014 and 2015 after beating P.V. Sindhu and Carolina Marin respectively.

Former world no. 6 Parupalli Kashyap also showed signs of coming back on the world stage as he beat the Firman Abdul Kholik of Indonesia in three sets by 9-21, 22-20, 21-8 in a match lasting 57 minutes on court no. 1 in Babu Banarasi Das stadium in Lucknow. He is also the two-time winner of this championship in 2012 and 2015.

Young shuttler Sameer Verma has been giving his everything to win this week as he is likely to qualify for the World Tour Finals to be held in Guangzhou if he wins the title. He beat the Chinese shuttler Zhao Junpeng in two straight games by 22-20, 21-17. He will now be up against another Chinese shuttler, Zhou Zeqi in the quarter-finals.

No. 4 seed B. Sai Praneeth also advanced to the last-eight in the absence of Kidambi Srikanth after an easy 21-12, 21-10 victory over Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia in just 29 minutes. He will now meet no. 6 seed Lu Guangzu of China on Friday.

Ashwini and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will be looking forward to reaching the semifinals with their respective partners in the doubles events. They will be up against Ronald Ronald and Annisa Saufika of Indonesia in mixed doubles. While Ashwini will be in action with N. Sikki Reddy in women's doubles, Satwik will play against Chinese pair in men's doubles with Chirag Shetty.
