Boxer Vijender Singh tests negative for drugs, says NADA

Vijender Singh practice for London Olympics

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) announced on Tuesday that Vijender Singh has tested negative in his drug test. This comes as a huge relief for the Olympic medallist, and also for the boxing fraternity.

Vijender Singh had to submit blood and urine samples to NADA, as directed to him by the Sports Ministry.

He was accused of consuming heroin, and his name popped up in the drug scandal when the police recovered 26 kilos of heroin, estimated to be around worth 130 crores, from NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon’s house in Shivalik Vihar, Zirakpur on March 7. A car belonging to Vijender’s wife Archana was also found near the NRI’s house.

“Vijender Singh along with four others was subjected to an out of competition test for banned substances. A full menu test was conducted which included testing for psychotropic substances. Tests were only carried out on blood and urine samples.”

” The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is glad to announce that on the basis of these tests, none of the boxers were found to have used any banned substances in the recent past,” said a ministry release.

Anoop Singh Kahlon, the accused who was arrested in the drug haul, confessed to having sold heroin to Vijender Singh and his sparring partner Ram Singh, and hence the boxer was suspected of being involved in the scandal.
