India clinch President's Cup boxing tournament ahead of 30 other countries

Pinki Jangra struck gold in the 51 kg category

Indian boxing proved itself on the world stage yet again by securing the President’s Cup in Palembang, Indonesia. The team notched up 33 points to finish ahead of Asian counterparts Mongolia, thanks to the gold medals secured by Rakesh Kumar and Harpal Singh in the 69 kg and 75 kg weight category respectively.

From the women’s category, Shamjetsabam Sarjubala (48 kg) and Pinki Jangra (51 kg) struck gold for India. Harpal defeated Korea’s Jee Deok-Seong, while Rakesh outclassed Japan’s Hiroaki Kinjo. Manish Kumar had to settle for a bronze medal, succumbing to a semi-final loss at the hands of Dorjnyambuu Otgondalai from Mongolia.

This particular achievement highlighted India’s dominance over world boxing as over 130 boxers participated from 30 different countries. Coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said, “This is for the first time that we have become champions at this tournament, which goes to show the progress that Indian boxing has been making. It is a brilliant performance, but we hope to keep improving.”
