Indian Boxing Council certifies 13 officials for professional boxing fights in India

It was only last week that Boxing fans across the country witnessed the Pro - debut of India’s first global boxing superstar, Vijender Singh at Manchester Arena, wherein he convincingly outclassed and knocked out an upcoming British boxer Sonny Whiting in the 3rd round of the contest.

While Indians across the country celebrated, It will now come as great joy to all Indian sport fans that the Indian Boxing Council – a body formed a few months back to promote and govern the sport of Pro- Boxing within India, which incidentally also licensed, Vijender Singh as its 1st Pro Boxer, started off on a journey of its own on the same day as Vijender’s Pro debut by conducting a workshop cum certification clinic to upgrade Indian officials to standards demanded in Professional Boxing around the world

Brigadier Raja, President IBC said “When we talk about creating a Boxing ecosystem – we mean developing capacities in Refereeing & Judging of contests, Doctors, Paramedics, Other ring officials like Master of Ceremonies, Ring Whips, Trainers, Seconds, Cut men over and above other roles in fight productions etc. The IBC is committed to training and developing an entire platform which can start producing true Asian Champions and World champions in the next few years.”

The Indian Boxing Council earlier today released a list of 13 officials certified to officiate as referees & Judges as well as Ring side Doctors in sanctioned IBC Pro Boxing contests which shall be held across India from December 2015 onwards.

These officials were given their “IBC Technical Official Badges” during a 3 day Clinic Cum certification examination, held at Pune. They were certified as 2 Star and 1 Star grades based on a stringent criteria which involved testing their practical and theoretical knowledge as well as submission of their credentials from their previous Amateur Boxing experience.

Brigadier PKM Raja, added “The integrity of the entire boxing industry starts with the excellent, quality, knowledgeable and dedicated Ring officials. With this certification clinic, We at IBC have begun our journey towards projecting India as a world leader in the sport of Pro Boxing.

Chairman of the Ring officials Commission of IBC, Mr. Gaive Nagporewala who has also officiated as a Referee & Judge at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 added

“The Indian Boxing Council (IBC) expects uniformity in actions, responsibilities, duties and performance by its IBC Qualified Ring officials. These workshops and certifications of all Ring officials will establish minimum standards and define the criteria to be followed during professional boxing matches organized under the aegis of Indian Boxing Council (IBC)”

Chairperson of the IBC Medical Commission, Dr. Sanjogita Soodan another seasoned Boxing official who has certified 2 senior MBBS Doctors as Ringside Doctors said,

“Boxing is a an extremely dangerous sport, hence it has to be very ably supported by a strong medical commission which shall also oversee the Anti Doping regulations mandated by NADA and WADA. We shall ensure a safe and a clean sport for the Boxing enthusiasts in India who can now witness high quality and adrenaline pumping contests similar to Pro Boxing around the world.”

The IBC has already conducted 6 First Contact clinics across the country in different cities like Delhi NCR, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bhiwani, Patiala, Combatore over the last few months to educate the Indian Boxing fraternity on how to turn pro.
