London Olympics 2012

The IBF (Indian Boxing Federation) held a Press Conference today after their executive meeting which began at 10:30 am. During the Press Conference, the IBF executives explained about the Plans that they have to support the growth and development of Boxing in India in the States /Boards in a systematic and progressive manner with the help of Marketing Partners ‘Percept’ as well as kit sponsors ‘Monnet’ and other regular sponsors such as ‘Mittal Champions Trust’, ‘SAHARA’ etc.

Incidentally, a few notable achievements have come in the past one month.

Indian Youth Boxers have done the Country proud as they have produced a World Champion (Vikas Krishan – 60 kgs) as well as a Silver medalist (Shiva Thapa – 54 kgs) in the recently concluded World Youth Championships at Baku, Azerbaijan. The other members of the squad also performed creditably well whereby we had four quarter finalists and it is indeed heartening to note that amongst a total of 466 boxers representing 90 Countries, India stood 4th in the Overall Team Standings with a tally of 22 pts.

Thus both of them have qualified for the 1st Youth Olympic Games at Singapore in August 2010. A total of 66 boxers from around the World will participate in the Youth Olympics in the 11 Wt Categories. From this World Championships at Baku, a total of 44 boxers (4 in each of the 11 Wt Cats) have qualified for the Youth Olympics. The balance 22 slots will be given as wild card entries by AIBA.
