Lets be Rational about Boxing!-Eliya Abbas Syed

‘Rugby should be banne

d, soccer should be banned, cricket should be banned, in fact let’s just ban all sports because they all pose risks to an injuries!’I find the statement of the boxing critics not any different to the one mentioned above. We all need to understand that little things such as even walking from one place may cause an injury, but that doesn’t stop us from walking, does it??? In the same way, I strongly believe that Boxing should NOT be banned.

Boxing, along with running, has been the purest form of sport testing the human body against others. And let’s also not forget that boxing is one of the sports which demands lots of fitness, which in turn encourages boxers to stay even fitter. It encourages them to sweat out some buckets of water in the gyms for lots of hours, and also teaches them self-discipline.

Simultaneously, others may argue that boxing can be a very brutal sport, however the boxers already know about the risks of boxing and consider them beforehand. It’s their own decision to take the risk and it’s them who will have to pay for the price if anything happens so why ban it totally. And let’s not forget about the amount of money the boxers can earn from this sport, it’s become the only source of income of thousands. Boxing offers a way out of poverty for many young poor boys who have no future, it gives them a better option of building a good career instead of stealing or being drug-dealers which means that boxing also prevents many crimes from being committed.

To conclude, I certainly believe that banning boxing is certainly not the best option. Banning it would just drive it ‘underground’ where it will only get worse and even more dangerous. It is better for the boys to come out in a ring and fight wearing gloves and other protective measures along with a referee keeping an eye on them than fighting in remote barns and cellars with bare fists and no rules. I personally believe that instead of banning this awesome sport, more concentration should be put on providing better medical facilities inside the ring for the boxers.

My sincere thanks for this great young writter for this fabulous article.I am in total agreeance having boxed in my youth of all his points.I often bemoan how reactionary society is these days.As is the case in regards to this great sport.
