Major Upsets at Monnet 11th National women's Boxing Championship

The Monnet 11th National Women’s Boxing Championships got off to a successful start at the Lulu International Convention Centre, Thrissur, Kerala today the 5th December 2010 at 3.00 pm. A total of 177 boxers representing 31 States / Boards are participating in this Elite Championships for Women. Shri K Radhakrishnan, Honourable Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly inaugurated the Championships. Adv T Ramakrishnan MLA, Chairman of the Organising Committee gave the welcome address followed by Col PK Muralidharan Raja, Secretary General, Indian Boxing Federation who gave the keynote address. The young girls of Kailasanadha Vidyanikethan gave a sterling ‘Ranga Pooja’ dance recital which was appreciated by the boxers and spectators. (Photo attached).

The Light Fly Wt category 48 kgs saw some major upsets in the opening session wherein Pinky (Haryana) was defeated on points 3:2 by Vanlal Duati (Tripura) (Photo attached). Similarly 2007 Guwahati Asian Gold Medalist Kalpana Choudhary (RSPB) was defeated on points 5:0 by Mamta (Bihar).

Monnet Group Managing Director Mr Sandeep Jajodia has graciously announced Monnet Power Awards for winners of every bout ie. Rs 500/ for winners of all preliminary bouts, Rs 2000/ for quarterfinals, Rs 3000/ for semifinals and Rs 5000/ for winners of final bouts. Monnet Group is also the Title Sponsors for this National Championships.

The Monnet 11th National Women’s Championships has a galaxy of International boxers such as former World Champion Sarita Devi representing Manipur, former World Champion Jenny RL representing All India Police, former World Champion KC Lekha representing Kerala and other Internations such as Kavita Goyat (Asian Games Bronze Medalist), Priyanka Chaudhary etc. This National Championship will be the qualifier for the National Games at Jharkand in February 2011. All quarterfinalists will qualify for the National Games at Jharkhand. The National Campers for London Olympics 2012 will also be selected based on the performances of boxers at this National Championships.
