Questions surround Manny Pacquiao's retirement from boxing and run for senate

Simple meeting or is Pacquiao consulting an expert?

Eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao has reportedly contradicted statements by Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, the boxing promotion firm that represents him. Arum had previously stated that Pacquiao, the second highest paid athlete in the world would fight one final time, in 2016, before hanging up his gloves and running for the Senate in Philippines.

Apparently, ‘Pac-man’ wants to fight several times before thinking of retirement. Pacquiao had the following to say to reporters, in response to Arum’s remarks: "I know better what is happening to my body," , Just leave it alone. Better not to react to that."

Arum is quoted as saying on Thursday that the four-division lineal champion will fight just once more, next year, and then focus on his politicial pursuits of being a Senate member: "I believe he'll take one more fight, then run for the Senate in the Philippines." This comes after Arum’s opinion that Pacquiao could possibly fight more than once: "He could fight twice more, I guess, but it sets up better for him to fight, then run."

Arum reportedly met with representatives of former light-welterweight world champion Amir Khan in Britain, ostensibly to negotiate a match between the two. However, sources close to Premier Boxing Champions, Khan’s promoter, are apprehensive of this occurring because he might not be allowed to fight outside the organization founded by Arum’s longtime rival and influential boxing manager, Al Haymon.

On the possibility of a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, Arum felt that there are a number of details to consider and had the following to say: "From what I've heard, Mayweather is retiring. I guess they could fight again, but many things would have to happen."

Pacquiao fought Mayweather in a losing effort earlier in May, in what was billed as the “Fight Of The Century” and set a boxing record with 4.4 million pay-per-view buys. It was later confirmed by a medical exam that Pacquiao’s performance was hindered by a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Pacquiao wears a cap with many feathers. He is a member of the House of Representatives as part of the 16th Congress of the Philippines, representing the province of Sarangani. ‘Pac-man’ is also head coach-cum-point guard of the Mahindra Enforcers in the Philippine Basketball Association and owns a team in the PBA Development League. Pacquiao has had quite a few movie and television roles in addition to all these, making him possibly the most multi-faceted sportsperson or public figure in the world.
