Mayweather vs Ortiz: Boxing Preview

Louie

Can underdog Victor Ortiz retain his WBC Welterweight championship against Floyd Mayweather, or…

Will Money Mayweather dispose of his 42nd straight opponent and set up the only fight we want to see?

It’s fight week, and despite boxing having basically died because of corruption, late start times, Don King and a lack of a true dominant heavyweight champion, I still get fired up for the anticipation of a big time fight. I don’t know if Floyd Mayweather (41-0 25 KO’s) and Victor Ortiz (29-2-2 KO’s) will have a Hagler-Hearns slug fest, but my guess is it will quickly become forgettable.

Mayweather hasn’t fought in 16 months, is 34 years old & seems too busy burning $100 bills in clubs. Ortiz on the other hand will come out agrressive and look to make a statement. His over aggressiveness will play right into Floyd’s hands as the fight wears on. Once Ortiz makes a mistake, Floyd will capitalize and begin to dissect him like a surgeon.

It’s fair to wonder if Floyd’s hand speed and quickness will be the same as it’s always been, but I wouldn’t count on that if I were Ortiz. It has been cool getting to know Ortiz in HBO’s 24/7 show leading up to this fight, and he can definitely fight. Just ask Andre Berto about that. The problem I have with him is that he quit in the Marcos Maidana fight in June of ’09. When a boxer quits in the middle of a fight, you become my enemy like Ivan Drago was in the 80?s.

Mayweather vs Ortiz might only be an appetizer, but it's still a big deal if you love the fight game.

Floyd might drop a couple of round early as he gets Ortiz’s timing down, but it’s only a matter of time until we fast forward our thinking AGAIN to a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. I’ll take Floyd in a controlling unanimous decision (shocking, I know). That is, as long as Ortiz doesn’t quit like a puto before the 12th round ends. Now, back to where my mind will be wondering Saturday night…

Doesn’t this have to be Floyd’s last fight before he fights Pac-Man? Pacquiao himself will fight Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12th in what will, hopefully, be his last tuneup. How many more times can boxing fans be expected to drop $59.95 to see the two best fighters in the world easily dispose of lower qualified bums that nobody cares about? It can’t continue, and Mayweather knows it.

I think Pacquiao would sign on the dotted line tomorrow, but Floyd will likely again pull some bullshit once the “talks” resume after Saturday night. The hangup will again be about drug testing. Shoot me in the face…Now.

Mayweather wants random blood & urine testing. Pacquiao agreed to unlimited urine testing but is apprehensive about random blood testing. Floyd has responded with “take the test.” You see, I don’t like petty drama. If random blood tests up to fight day aren’t required, then neither fighter should have to take them. It sounds so remedial, doesn’t it? Not in Floyd’s world.

Like Floyd, I am skeptical about Pacquiao being clean. However, how do you try and make up rules as you go? Also, who is Floyd to ask Pacquiao to train exclusively in the United States? It’s a joke, and it’s a discussion for another day. For now, it’s about Mayweather and Ortiz. It’s fight week kids! And even though most fans could care less, it’s still a big deal to a die hard fight fan like me. I’m ready…
